Cavity Wall Tie
Cavity Wall Tie Spacing Problems with wall tie corrosion have become commonplace and recent reports show that millions of homes are being affected by serious corrosion of the cavity wall ties. At worst, this could cause outside walls to collapse or gable ends to be pulled away by high winds.
- Horizontal cracking at regular intervals in external mortar joints
- Outward bulging of the wall
- The lifting of roof edges
- Internal cracks
The problem is usually manifested in the appearance of cracks or bulges in the external brick skin caused by the corroding ties expanding up to seven times their original thickness, or by wire ties snapping within the cavity.
To determine the spacing of the existing wall ties, the wall is inspected with the aid of a metal detector. To establish the wall tie type cavity width and the extent of any corrosion, a visual inspection within the cavity is carried out with the aid of a boroscope and/or by the removal of the mortar bed and/or brick adjacent to a wall tie location.
We then give recommendations for the best actions to be taken.
